Cape Bonavista Lighthouse - Bonavista (Area 7)

No trip would be complete without a stop at the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1841, took two years to build, and on September 11, 1843, the lighthouse was put into operation. From the site of the lighthouse, you may well see puffins perched on cliffs or sea stacks and often flying overhead. The “Cape” offers excellent photo opportunities at every turn!

King's Cove Lighthouse- King's Cove (Area 8)

Walk along the Long Shore Road out to the King's Cove Lighthouse, built in 1893.. The lighthouse was built after some fifty shipwrecks occurred in Bonavista Bay. It was constructed of pre-cast iron shipped from Birmingham, England. The first lighthouse in Newfoundland to be fitted with a revolving kerosene light system from Sweden, it was visible from 14 nautical miles. For over sixty years, the position of Lighthouse Keeper was held by the Batterton family, until technology made the need for a full-time keeper unnecessary.

Green Island Lighthouse - Catalina / Port Union (Area 6)

Location: Southeast of Burnt Point, at the southern entrance to Catalina Harbour. Built in 1857, this lighthouse is still in an active aid in navigation managed by the Canadian Coast Guard. The building is not open to the public, and is only accesible by boat or helicopter. It is In 1956 the dwelling was removed from around the lighthouse and the tower was encased in concrete.
