Special Interest - Bird Watching On The Discovery Trail
Newfoundland is home to more than 225 species of nesting birds. The rich food supply of the north Atlantic and excellent nesting sites along the coast combine to create the perfect recipe for many of the world's largest seabird colonies. The rugged headlands and deep bays of the Discovery Trail provide an incredible opportunity for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers.
The tip of the Bonavista Peninsula with its coastal cliffs and berry rich headlands is great for viewing seabirds and shorebirds. From here you can get stunning views of the clown of the ocean, the Atlantic Puffin. Be sure to check out both Cape Bonavista and Elliston to see this remarkable bird up close and personal right from land.
At Bellevue Beach, along the Osprey Trail, you can find a high concentration of Osprey that feed regularly on flounder and other fish that live in the shallow waters of the estuary. You can also often find many species of shorebirds in late summer and fall such as Sanderlings, and several species of peeps that need to fuel up before heading south. Boreal forest birds such as the Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Pine Grosbeak and many species of warblers abound in the forest around Clarenville, Port Blandford and Terra Nova National Park.
During the spring both Port Blandford and Clarenville (Clode Sound & Random Sound) are home to one of the highest populations of waterfowl in the entire eastern region. Thousands of Canada Geese, Common Goldeneyes, Greater Scaup and Mergansers take advantage of the rich feeding grounds in the shallow water of the estuaries. Other great places to see various species of waterfowl and shorebirds include the Arnold's Cove Bird Sanctuary and Come by Chance Day-use Park.
From June 2 – 8, bird watching enthusiasts can enjoy the Terra Nova National Park Bird and Wildlife Festival. There will be live bird shows, guided bird hikes, public presentations, a banquet and much more. For more information, call 709-533-3130 or visit www.heritagefoundationtnnp.nl.ca
