The Area 4 - Lethbridge Musgravetown
Port Blandford
Route 230A to Route
233-234 (Lethbridge – Port Blandford)
From George's Brook continue on Route 230A to Route
230 at the base of the Bonavista Peninsula. After Morley's Siding, there is a turnoff
onto Route 233, which is an alternate route to and from the TCH. Route 233 takes
you through the farming communities of Lethbridge and Bloomfield. In season, stop
by the roadside to buy fresh vegetables and berries, or go berry picking at a local
“u-pick” farm.
Located in Musgravetown on Route 233, you find Malcom Brown Memorial Park. The park
features swimming in a fresh water pond, change rooms, fishing, a cook house, sandy
beach, playground area and overnight camping.
Route 233 will take you to Bunyan's Cove and, further along, will bring you to Port
Blandford, which is also accessible from the TCH near the gateway to Terra Nova
National Park. Nestled in a picturesque inlet at the bottom of Bonavista Bay called
Clode Sound, the Town of Port Blandford has beaches that offer panoramic ocean vistas
and great picnicking. Hike the 5-km linear Eagle Creek Trail, located at the entrance
to Terra Nova Hospitality Home on the Trans Canada Highway extending to the Terra
Nova Golf Resort.
Port Blandford is not just a summer destination, it offers four season activities!
The town comes alive in winter with snowmobiling on the nearby railbed, and is close
to skiing at White Hills near Clarenville.
If sporting is more to your taste, you can go for a round of golf at the award-winning,
Terra Nova Golf Resort. Try 18 holes onTwin Rivers Golf Course. The course winds
through some of the most scenic and unique settings of any golf course in Canada.
The contrast of the beautifully manicured fairways and greens set against the dramatic
and rugged beauty of the forest, rivers, and ocean, complete with moose, bald eagles
and salmon, make a round at Twin Rivers a truly unique experience.
Try your luck fly fishing on any of the three pristine Atlantic Salmon rivers that
run through the community into Clode Sound. Port Blandford has much to offer the
outdoor enthusiast!
The eastern gateway to Terra Nova National Park is located just west of Port Blandford.
The park is the province's first national park, and here you will find beautiful,
protected hinterland full of flora and fauna. 2007 will mark the 50th Anniversary
of Terra Nova National Park. Since the park was established, people of all ages,
from near and far, have visited this park and the surrounding communities. For many,
this region has become a tradition. This year, Terra Nova National Park will celebrate
these memories and traditions with a full year of special events, performances and
activities. Visit www.heritagefoundationtnnp.nl.ca.
Back on Route 230, take a side trip along a protected inlet through the coastal
communities of Brooklyn, Portland, Jamestown and Winter Brook. While in Brooklyn,
visit St. Andrew's Anglican Church. Completed in 1879, the church was designated
a Heritage Structure in 1992 by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
St. Andrew's was the main church in the area; parishioners would flock to the services
on foot, over ice floes in Winter and by boat the remainder of the year. Visitors
can also view the William Pye House while in Brooklyn. This two and a half storey
gable-roofed house is an excellent example of the type of design common in the Bonavista
Bay region into the 20th century. The William Pye House and its outbuildings are
registered heritage structures. In Portland, view the John Hancock House, another
registered Heritage Structure.
Route 230 to Route 230-14, Charleston – Sweet Bay
From Route 230, turn onto Route 230-14 to Charleston. The town has been involved
in fishing, farming, logging and boat building over the years, and today still offers
excellent farming. Continue on to Sweet Bay. Ask the locals to show you the way
to Salt Water Pond, a hike which takes you inland to a pond surrounded by native
flora.
